THE NIGHT LIFE OF TREES
What happens in the forest after darkness falls? Artists from the Gond tribal community in the densely forested region of central India imagine trees as you have never seen them before.
From the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India, the Gonds are a community of highly visual people. They surround themselves with their stunning art, which is traditionally painted on the mud floors and walls of their homes.
Hailing from a densely forested region, the tree is at the heart of their art, providing a rich source of inspiration.
The artwork used for the cards was originally drawn for the bestselling book The Night Life of Trees. Each card has been screen-printed by hand at Tara Books’ sustainable print workshop in Chennai, South India, which employs, trains and nurtures young bookmaking artisans.
Proceeds from the sale of each pack are shared between the artists and the artisans involved in creating the cards
The trees have been rendered by Durga Bai, Ramsingh Urveti and Bhajju Shyam—widely acknowledged to be the finest living artists working within the Gond tradition.
