New

December 10th (1948) was the day The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed. This illustrated picture book brings alive a rich and complex theme in a deceptively simple way. The text— provided by Amnesty International—turns difficult concepts into comprehensible ideas. Particularly as the Indian education system introduces human rights as a subject into its curriculum, this will prove a useful supplemental text for middle schoolers and upwards.

With illustrations by 30 international artists of great renown, the book has sold 150,000 copies, to date, around the world.

Revolution
By Sara

A unique picture-book for adults with content that is discernibly political, Revolution is a powerful allegory in red, black and white by French artist Sara. Her simple yet forceful collage art evokes revolt, repression and war, but also immutable freedom in the face of tyranny. Charged with emotion, this is a world in which visuals take the place of words. Sara’s torn-paper technique creates a new language that makes for an impassioned but minimalist narrative, drawing the reader into and beyond the struggle for liberty. This English edition also includes an afterword on historical people’s revolutions and struggles from around the world.

Revolution is unique combination of art and politics for all ages that communicates through visual language a timely and ardent story of the perpetual struggle for freedom, shedding perspective on past uprisings through to current events.

Artists, activists, politicos, idealists and geronimos will find a spot in their hearts and on their bookshelves for this compelling book.

Barefoot Gen: A Cartoon Story of Hiroshima
Barefoot Gen: A Cartoon Story of Hiroshima
A powerful, tragic story of the bombing of Hiroshima, seen through the eyes of the artist as a young boy growing up in an anti-militarist Japanese family.

Keiji Nakazawa

Barefoot Gen is the powerful, tragic story of the bombing of Hiroshima, seen through the eyes of the artist as a young boy growing up in an anti-militarist Japanese family. Of particular interest is Barefoot Gen's focus on the problems that arise when a peace-loving family has to survive in a militarized culture. With a special introduction by peace activist and film maker Anand Patwardham, this classic brings home the reality of an event in our common history, which we must never allow to happen again.

This unusual novel combines the excitement of action with a lyrical feel for nature and a quirky sense of humour.
Sirish Rao

Vikram Karanth sets off on a mountaineering expedition to the Himalaya, with an odd assortment of people ... a sherpa, two yuppies, an alternative energy scientist and an income tax officer. They each have their own reasons for coming to the mountains, but Vikram grapples with a deeper question: what is exploration? This unusual novel combines the excitement of action with a lyrical feel for nature and a quirky sense of humour.

Excerpt:

I skipped around mud-smeared patches of ice and ducked away from stones tumbling down the sides. The snow was getting closer now and the shine of the glacier came flashing at my eyes from above.

Then we came to the snout of the glacier, a broken mouth of ice standing just above barren rubble. It yawned wide, a violent explosion of air and water spraying away in gems. First clashing out and snoggling around the rocks, then decisively booming away in a column of grey to become the Dolpi. In the silence between the two spines of moraine, the only sound was the deep thump of water and the solid boom of air.

At first hesitant and self-conscious, the letters soon become more candid until the two are caught in a whirlwind of words. Finally, they must decide whether they dare to meet. Translated from the German, this award-winning novel for young people captures the thrill of words, writing and letters – invoking a feeling that phone calls and email cannot ever match.

Excerpt
Hi there Mona,

How should I start? You’ve caught me a bit off guard. When you said you’d write to me, I thought - she’s never going to do that. She’s just saying it. And what’s this about writing - what’s the phone for? Writing letters is a bit old fashioned isn’t it? Why don’t you just give me your phone number?

I had to write letters to my godmother - she lives somewhere in the south, in the Swabian Alps. I’ve never visited her. She always sent me a book for my birthday and for Christmas. That was okay because my parents would never put out any cash for books - they still don’t. I like to read. But when I used to write my thank you notes to my godmother, I nearly fractured my fingers. I’m not very good at writing about myself. I’m not a good letter writer.

It would be nicer to meet, don’t you think?...Should I just ring your doorbell? Would you be zapped if I did?

Oh man, what a scrawl. And it’s already my seventh try, so I’m just going to send this off - otherwise nothing’s going to come of it. The next one will be better. Promise!

Your David.
