Real Men Don\'t Pick Primroses
Sirish Rao
Vikram Karanth sets off on a mountaineering expedition to the Himalaya, with an odd assortment of people ... a sherpa, two yuppies, an alternative energy scientist and an income tax officer. They each have their own reasons for coming to the mountains, but Vikram grapples with a deeper question: what is exploration? This unusual novel combines the excitement of action with a lyrical feel for nature and a quirky sense of humour.
Excerpt:
I skipped around mud-smeared patches of ice and ducked away from stones tumbling down the sides. The snow was getting closer now and the shine of the glacier came flashing at my eyes from above.
Then we came to the snout of the glacier, a broken mouth of ice standing just above barren rubble. It yawned wide, a violent explosion of air and water spraying away in gems. First clashing out and snoggling around the rocks, then decisively booming away in a column of grey to become the Dolpi. In the silence between the two spines of moraine, the only sound was the deep thump of water and the solid boom of air.
